    The future of the Artisphere

Here’s an article that appeared in Arl Now today about the future of our current meeting venue, the Artisphere. Briefly, the space is likely to close Mondays and Tuesdays and open later in the day. So far, that doesn’t sound like it will cause any problems for us. I really hope they are able to stay open for the long term. It’s sad that their restaurant is closed, but hopefully they’ll find someone who can open a more inspiring restaurant there in the future. I’d love to see the venue used by one of DC’s successful food trucks, for instance. How cool would that be? 🙂

Oh no! Good thing we moved MoWiTy to Wednesdays! I would love some delicious street food at the Artisphere, although I wonder if I’d be able to write in the midst of a burrito coma… 🙂

MoWity’s schedule continues Wednesdays at Artisphere

Hi monkeys! We’re having our first post-NaNoWriMo MoWity meeting this Weds! Also, we’ll continue to meet Wednesdays at Artisphere for as long as it’s a good date and location for everybody. See you Wednesday! 🙂

HEY: We’re UPSTAIRS at Artisphere instead of downstairs this time. Just go up the escalator into the “Town Hall” where the bar is, then go up the stairs to find us.

Special Monday Night MoWiTy meeting on the 21st

So that no one has to miss out due to the Thanksgiving holiday, our Monkeys with Typewriters meeting will be on Monday, November 21 next week! We’ll meet from 7PM-10PM at the Artisphere as usual.

Our Wednesday night meeting is going well and it’s nice and quiet here at the Artisphere. I even got a chance to ride the chicken! Here is proof:

Edit to add: Stephanie also had a victorious ride on the mechanical poultry!

    The Soundry is Closed

The breaking news is that our venue, The Soundry, is closed and may never reopen. (See the Soundry’s Facebook wall for the latest information we have.) What are a million monkeys with typewriters to do? Needless to say, the location of our next meeting is TBD.

Please comment here to discuss. Thanks!

UPDATE (10/21/2011, 1PM): Sadly, we still have no official word when or if The Soundry will reopen. If it is not open on Monday, the current plan is to have MoWiTy at 7PM as usual at the Town Hall at the Artisphere in Rosslyn, VA. We’ll post a confirmation of our location on Monday.

UPDATE (10/24/2011, 2PM): We’re on for meeting at 7PM in the Town Hall in the Artisphere in Rosslyn. Directions are available on their website. We’ll try to be in the upper level, and will be the group with a bunch of tables pushed together, typing furiously (we hope). See you tonight!

What the shit? Does anyone have the full newstory?

      • xiann 8:42 pm on October 20, 2011 Permalink | Log in to Reply

There is not much news out there yet, and it’s not totally clear whether #OccupySoundry this Friday night at 7PM is a go either, although some people say they’re showing up anyway. I’m surprised and kinda worried, I’m really going to miss that place if this is the final ending 🙁

I really really don’t want this place to die. This is unadulterated bullshit.

I know! I will totally donate to their telethon! But I don’t know if they’re having one.

Do you think Lacy or Sarah can help get the media involved?

      • xiann 9:04 pm on October 20, 2011 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Hmm, maybe! I’m surprised there hasn’t been any media coverage of this myself! I searched Google News before I sent this message to the MoWiTy group and couldn’t find anything. However, since I haven’t really heard anything “official” from the Soundry, I don’t know what their next move will be. Most of what I have to go on is the fact that the Soundry IS closed (I went there last night) and there is a lot of sad buzz on Facebook with an air of finality. I hope to find out more about the official situation soon.

So I emailed the Vienna Patch because they’ve reported on the Soundry a lot, and they said they’re already covering the story. Hopefully they’ll have some news out soon at least …

Great! It will be nice to find out more about what’s going on… I’m really hoping this isn’t it for The Soundry! :[

Looking up my characters’ origins by surname

Coming up with some last names to use in my novel tonight, I came across this helpful website: The Surname Database (http://www.surnamedb.com). Some English surnames I’m using in my novel: Frampton, Willborough, Hartfield. Looking up my characters’ surnames seems like a good way to find out more about their backgrounds so far …

    Columbus Day Holiday

Since a lot of our regulars can’t make it tonight, there will be no official MoWiTy meeting at the Soundry later. But if you’re in a writing mood, go write at the Soundry (or wherever you are) anyway! See you next week 🙂

Screenwriting suggestions! I wanted to write these down.

Here’s a book that was suggested by Patrick at our meeting tonight for screenwriters: The Screenwriter’s Problem Solver: How to Recognize, Identify, and Define Screenwriting Problems by Syd Field. Also, some software he mentioned for screenwriting: Celtx.

And here’s a link to Patrick’s podcast novel project: The Horde.

MoWiTy meetings recommence for the Fall :D

Hi guys! We’re recommencing our MoWiTy meetings now that summer vacation is over. We’re here at The Soundry tonight! I’ll send around a reminder email before our next meeting as well. There are also several great writing events coming up, so I’m going to see about setting up a calendar for MoWiTy meetings and DC area writing events too!

I’m not sure if I can make it tonight but I’ll try. But I was wondering if anyone would be up for going to the National Book Festival on Saturday?

      • xiann 1:32 am on September 20, 2011 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Yeah, some of us are thinking of going … there is Art Carnage at The Soundry on Saturday night and we’ll be there. Not sure if I want to go to The Mall on Sat or Sun?

Maybe it’s time for a summer vacation?

Hi guys! I’ve been chatting with people about our meeting tonight and everyone I’ve talked to is on vacation or traveling. You lucky bastards. Also, there are going to be several people on vacation next week and the following week. Do we need a summer break?

Tonight’s meeting is cancelled unless I hear from a few people who can make it. I’m wondering if June and July are both going to be bad months in general, so let’s play it by ear. Please do let me know if you want to keep up the meeting schedule, otherwise we may take a summer vacation and resume our regular meetings in August or something.

Again, even if we don’t have a formal meeting, please keep on writing and feel free to keep blogging here with updates on your latest work, writing tips, and whatevers. Catch you monkeys later!
